An Introduction To Data Logging Systems

Feb 22,2017 by Edulab

A data logger (or data recorder) is a piece of scientific equipment used for recording data. Data logging systems are made up of a data logger and a sensor.

Data logging systems can be set up to record, then left unattended for a duration of time, taking measurements at set periods. From these measurements, the user can then build a picture of the changes over time and analyse accordingly.

Data Loggers

Data loggers are generally small, portable devices that sometimes come with an LCD, displaying the data being collected. Some data loggers also come with USB connectivity – allowing you to connect it to a PC or Mac.

Typically equipped with a microprocessor and internal memory, ideal for storing the data collected via external sensors, data loggers

Sensors

There are many different types of information that data logging systems can record. This information is recorded via sensors which feed a stream of data into the data logger. Some examples include:

Many sensors can be used either inside or outside. Be sure to always check the manufacturer’s recommendation before carrying out any experiments.
