A Guide to Chemistry Equipment

Dec 02,2014 by Edulab

Chemistry is a scientific field that has made a huge contribution to our lives and which is famed for being a seemingly endless source of important scientific discoveries. Chemistry labs across the world conduct a variety of exciting and groundbreaking experiments in order to unravel the secrets of matter. These experiments would not be possible without a range of essential equipment. So here we take a closer look at some of the most common pieces of laboratory equipment utilised by chemists today.

Glassware

As mentioned in one of our previous blogs, by far one of the most iconic pieces of scientific equipment is the test tube, which can be used for a variety of experimental purposes, commonly to hold, mix, and heat chemicals. Glass beakers are also another common sight in chemistry labs; these come in a range of sizes and are also used for a range of purposes, such as holding, mixing and heating liquids. However, whilst they are typically marked with a scale, beakers are not in fact intended for measurement purposes, given that they typically offer poor accuracy when compared with other more precise methods of measurement.

Erlenmeyer flasks, also known as conical flasks, are another type of glassware found in chemistry labs. These laboratory flasks feature a flat, wide base, with tapered sides and a vertical neck, which allows their contents to be mixed by swirling, without the risk of spillage. As such they are one of the most common and useful pieces of chemistry equipment.

Bunsen Burner

Another iconic piece of laboratory equipment found in schools and laboratories across the world is the Bunsen burner. This laboratory staple is capable of producing an open gas flame that can be used for a range of purposes, such as heating and sterilization. Bunsen burners are connected to a gas source, and the mixture of gas and air can be adjusted to produce a flame of the required strength.

Pipettes

Pipettes are another essential piece of laboratory equipment that can be used to transport a measured volume of liquid. Pipettes can offer great accuracy and precision and are available in a range of different designs according to the purpose for which they are intended.

Crucibles

Crucibles are also commonly used in chemistry experiments; these small clay cups can be heated to extreme temperatures, and as such are used to conduct chemical reactions at high temperatures.

Rubber Bungs

Another piece of chemistry equipment you will probably remember from your school days is the humble rubber bung. These handy devices are made from hardened rubber and are typically used to seal flasks so that liquids or gases cannot escape.

Here at Edulab we are a leading supplier of high quality laboratory equipment, including a range of chemistry lab supplies to meet your requirements. For more information please do not hesitate to contact us and we will be happy to help you with your enquiries.
